Improvisation and Set Material

This class is Serious Play. Focusing in on tapping into our playful nature - one that gives way to a sense of invigorating agency and joy, we will draw on a rich and varied range of dance trainings (experiential anatomy, somatics, yoga, improvisation skills and contemporary dance approaches) and we will enter into creative, physical and imaginative states with our bodies and with each other. The class will flow between deepening our attention to sensations, and refining textures and articulations in the body, and grow into active physicality and risk taking. By bringing attention to the individual and collective experience, the aim is to connect to a sense of aliveness, adaptability, and lightness. The class will finish with a phrase that is built up throughout the week.

1. Could you give us an example of how we might enter an imaginative state? What tools are we using?
I like to use imaginative states as a way to explore new qualities and patterns in the body.  One example to simulate more internal sensations, is to imagine your skeleton floating in space and begin to move from the bones.  Another approach is externalizing the body in space by imagining dodging objects as you move across the floor.

2. What kinds of risks will we experiment with in this class?
Playing with losing control of our bodies
Working with the unexpected
Going upside down and downside up
